What a wonderful weekend in the New Jersey countryside... pumpkins, apples and BUFFALO!! That's right, I said "BUFFALO". My friend, Scarlett, just happens to own the only buffalo farm in New Jersey so a group of us visited the farm this weekend for a bouncy hayride into the fields, past the buffalo and out to the pumpkin patch. The children heeded all warnings about staying seated on the hayride, waiting for the tractor to come to a complete stop before getting up and last but not least, picking a pumpkin that YOU can carry back to the tractor! Along with the pumpkins we picked fresh corn, peppers, eggplant and tomatoes from the garden.
Well, as if that wasn't enough fun for one weekend, we then continued our farm frolicking at Melick's farm picking delicious apples. I think the real thrill for the kids was running up and down the rows of trees trying to see how many apples they knocked off at one time. "Slow down, your going to trip and fall into the apple mush under the trees, stop throwing the apples, your going to hit someone in the head." Thankfully, we all made it out unscathed with full bellies from all the apple sampling.
My friend Jackie and her children won the award for most apples picked...14 pounds! That's a lot of pie.
On Sunday, my Dad watched the kids for a few hours. When my husband finally came home to rescue, I mean, relieve him, he left tired and covered in flour from baking apple crisp. On second thought that was my kitchen that was covered in flour from baking apple crisp!
I was at the Somerville Street Fair with my Central Jersey Author Alliance friends selling our one-of-a-kind self-published books to the hordes of interested pedestrians. Even Mommies can dream!
